Milk alternatives….we used to have to choose from cow milk – whole, 2%, skim, or fat-free. Then came soy milk. Other animal milk (especially popular in other countries) include goat, water buffalo, reindeer, horse, sheep, camel, and yak. Recent finds turn us to plant-based milks. If you are allergic to dairy or find you just feel better without it….no worries. There are so many plant-based milks to choose from.
- Rice
- Soy
- Pea
- Coconut
- Oat
- Nut – almond, cashew, peanut, walnut, macadamia, and others
- Seed – flax, hemp, sunflower
This is good news for those with allergies, who are lactose intolerant, who are vegan, or who simply want to try something new. As more people are deciding to drink plant-based milk the industry continues to grow and provide more options. Be sure to read the ingredient list. Keep an eye on sugar and protein amounts, and look for those fortified with vitamin A, calcium and vitamin D to ensure you are getting nutrients for strong bones, hormone regulation, and general immune support. Vegan? Look for blends with vitamin B12 and DHA/EPA omega-3s as well.
So….no yaks in your backyard? No worries. These days we have lots of options!
