Facility Specifics

  • Pre-trial correctional facility
  • Inmates can be housed for a few hours to a few years depending on their legal status
  • Facility can house up to 1200 residents
  • Facility has a Medical Director on site Mon-Fri
  • 24-hour APPs on site are available to assist with everything from medical consultation to responding to acute medical conditions

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Description of Work

Intake Department

  • Assess patient upon arrival at the facility for immediate care needs and to assure medical stability before acceptance into the facility
  • Obtain vital signs and history of current health problems, significant past medical history, current/historic mental health needs, and current/historic substance use
  • Review the patient's current medications
  • Obtain urine sample to assess for the possibility of medically dangerous withdrawal medications as well as medications needed for specific symptoms present upon intake
  • Determine if the patient is fit for confinement in the facility
  • Physicians, NPs, and PAs are consulted for complex cases
  • Communication about care needs identified is documented and passed on to the nursing staff who will be assuming patient care
  • Admitted patients are seen within 48 hours by a nurse who completes a comprehensive health assessment and begins a plan of care for the patient.
  • Complete full medical history, repeat vital signs, and perform a nursing assessment
  • Contact the pharmacy to verify any medications currently taken or recommended
  • Obtain patient signature on a release form for release of information and to allow for access to outside medical, psychiatric, and pharmacy records for continuity of medical care
  • Screen for risk of mood disorders or suicide using a standardized tool

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Requirements

  • Active/Clear Nurse Licensure for the State of Missouri
  • Minimum 1-year experience
  • Clinical/corrections experience preferred
  • Direct care experience within the previous year
  • Active/Clear BLS (American Heart Association)
  • Successful completion of screening/application requirements (e.g., competency testing, drug screening, background check)
