A Nocturnist is a hospital-based physician who only works overnight. Most nocturnists are trained in internal medicine or family medicine and have experience in hospital medicine.

Physician/MD; Nocturnist Specifics

  • Medical Doctor only
  • Corrections facility
  • Renewable assignments
  • Full-time positions
  • 12-hour shifts (7:00pm to 7:00am)
  • Department: Urgent Care
  • Must attend HERO training

Physician/MD; Nocturnist Description of Work

  • Provide care to individual patients as needed
  • Examine, diagnose, and treat patients and their illnesses or injuries
  • Consult with correctional authorities to ensure an understanding of all medical requirements and restrictions
  • Educate patients on better health habits
  • Perform tests and exams as needed, including EKGs or X-rays
  • Transcribe med orders
  • Perform any additional medical-related duties as needed

Physician/MD; Nocturnist Requirements

  • Active/Clear license to practice medicine in the state of North Carolina
  • One-year experience required
  • Experience in corrections preferred
  • Active/Clear DEA
  • Active/Clear BLS (American Heart Association)
  • Successful completion of screening/application requirements (e.g., competency testing, drug screen, background check, physical exam, immunizations)
