Job Summary


ED nurses provide care for patients with various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention. These nurses quickly recognize life-threatening problems and are trained to help solve them on the spot. An ED nurse treats a variety of conditions from sore throats to heart attacks for patients of all ages and backgrounds. The core tasks of a trauma nurse include providing immediate and effective medical care, administering emergency medication and drugs, and performing emergency medical procedures as needed to stabilize patients in emergency care settings.

Description of Work

  • Must be able to recognize and treat life-threatening conditions
  • Records present symptomology, as well as thorough patient history.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans in coordination with other healthcare team members
  • Manage care of patients experiencing life-threatening problems
  • Perform triage interventions
  • Manage basic life support needs and stabilize the patient until the physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol
  • Record the patient’s vital signs
  • Work with physicians to assist in exams, diagnostic testing, and treatments
  • Provide IV therapies
  • Treat wounds
  • Provide exceptional bedside care
  • Prepare, administer, and record prescribed medications
  • Report adverse reactions to medications or treatments
  • Report suspected abuse to appropriate agencies
  • Initiate patient education plan as prescribed
  • Provide education and support to patient’s family members
  • Assess on an ongoing basis, the patient’s physical and emotional wellbeing
  • Work collaboratively with the attending physicians and surgical residents to ensure continuity of care to trauma and general surgery patients
  • Work closely with case managers, social workers. and financial counselors to help coordinate the discharge process
  • Function as a liaison for the trauma coordinator, research nurses, bedside nurses, and ancillary staff attached to the patient
  • Must possess expertise in recognizing other complications in the intensive care patient based on the patient’s disease process and work closely with physicians and other team members in implementing patient care
  • Perform other position related duties as assigned


  • Degree from an accredited nursing program
  • Active/Clear Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of North Carolina
  • TNCC Certification (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • Minimum 1-year work experience in an ER/ED setting
  • Active/Clear BLS (American Heart Association)
  • Active/Clear ACLS (American Heart Association)
  • Experience working with electronic medical records, email, and computer literate
  • Successful completion of competency testing, drug screening, background check, physical exam, immunizations, and other Nationalhcs screening/application requirements
  • Successful completion of other client/facility screening/application requirements
