Job Summary

Working with youth age 12-18 at a youth detention center.



  • 16-week renewable assignments
  • All shifts available
  • 8-12 hour daily shifts
    • The morning range is 6:45am to 8:00am, and the end time would be 8 hours later, with one hour for lunch
    • Lunch hour may be flexed based on center needs each day
  • On-call may be required and will be determined by the facility
  • Weekend work is a possibility
  • Must attend HERO training

Description of Work

  • Perform all health care services admission requirements per policy ad procedure to include venipuncture, vaccine administration, TST placement, intake assessment, admission labs, and form/documentation completion.
  • Verify any medication that the juveniles have with them upon entering the facility, assessing its validity and necessity (i.e., contacting a prescribing healthcare provider and/or pharmacist). Address and resolve issues with prescribed medications to include contacting prescribing providers, communication with parent/guardian, and Juvenile Court Counselors.
  • Manage clinics for primary care and psychiatric care, when applicable to include scheduling clinic times, provider order transcription, medication order processing, managing clinic flow, creating a schedule for appointments, and communicating with facility staff.
  • Process medication inventory and deliveries from contractual pharmacy vendor to include reconciliation with provider orders and inventory delivered specifically to each juvenile prescribed medication.
  • Prepare and administer medication as prescribed by a practitioner who is licensed in NC to administer or prescribed drugs in the course of his/her professional practice and monitor/audit UAP who are trained to administer medication.
  • Administer and/or delegate administration of non-prescribed medications per provider orders.
  • Be available for telephone consultation and emergency consultation at other times as determined by the nurse supervisor, facility director, or Health Services Manager.
  • Keep required records related to the health of the juveniles, documenting all services, treatments, and mediations rendered or coordinated.
  • Provide counseling for medical illnesses, treatments, preventive care, hygiene, HIV, and STDs for juveniles.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings focused on care management for the juveniles within the facility setting.
  • Notify juvenile's parents/guardians and the responsible agency in case of serious illness, surgery, injury, or death. Coordinate this with the facility nurse supervisor and/or clinical director.
  • Follow CLIA regulations for waived tests when performing tests on juveniles. A copy of tests granted waived status under CLIA is in the medical clinic at the facility. Assure competency in screening skills.
  • Data collection is required on controlled substances, health care statistics, juvenile's medical care expenses, and others deemed necessary by the Director of Juvenile Justice Health Services.
  • RNs shall comply with the facility's dress code.
  • RNs may carry the on-call beeper during times when not working at the facility. RNs may carry the on-call pages from 6pm to 6 am each day, Monday through Thursday (48 hours) and from 6pm on Friday to 6am on Monday (60 hours) for a total of 108 hours a week. RN may carry the beeper for a total of 13 weeks during the fiscal year.
  • RNs are subject to call back 24 hours each day. If called in an emergency situation, the RN agrees to return to the facility and render professional services as needed.
  • RNs will report to the Director of Juvenile Health Care Services, Regional Nurse Supervisor, or their designee.
  • RNs shall be required to record time of arrival, departure, and lunches in their designated area.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum 1-year experience
  • Experience with adolescent, school, community, or public health is preferred
  • Competence in assessment skills, managing clinic flow, reviewing and teaching about medications, assessing and responding to emergencies or emergent health issues both on-site and as phone triage
  • Direct care experience within the previous year
  • Active/Clear BLS (American Heart Association)
  • Current TB and Hepatitis declaration
  • Experience working with electronic medical records, email, and computer literate
  • Successful completion of competency testing, drug screen, background check, and other agency screening/application requirements
  • Successful completion of other client screening/application requirements
