Registered Nurse / Licensed Practical Nurse

Job Summary

Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) positions at a correctional facility in Vanceboro, NC.


  • 13-week or 26-week renewable assignments
  • 8-hour shifts and 12-hour shifts available
  • Shifts Available:
    • 12-hour shifts (6:00pm-6:00am)
    • 12-hour shifts (6:00am-6:00pm)
    • 8-hour shifts (5:45am-2:25pm
  • Must attend HERO training
  • Must be experienced in Phlebotomy and Event reporting

Description of Work

  • Conduct inmate sick call 3-times per week, or as determined by physician
  • Assist Unit physician with sick calls when physician is present
  • Conduct Restrictive Housing checks daily as dictated by physician
  • Use approved facility protocols to treat minor injuries and illnesses, which do not require a physician's attention
  • Prepare and administer medications as per physician orders
  • Refer inmates to physician's clinics or hospitals, as appropriate
  • Prepare medical records for transferring inmates, including medication transfer
  • Provide patients access to quality healthcare provided by competent healthcare professionals in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Ensure proper organization and maintenance of health records
  • Ensure all treatments and medications are fully documented in the patient’s health record
  • May be asked to perform Charge Nurse duties
  • Physical activity requirements include climbing up/downstairs, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.
  • Ensure all duties and responsibilities follow facility policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Active/Clear Licensure by the NC State Board of Nursing
  • Minimum 1-year clinical experience
  • Direct care experience within the previous year
  • Clinical/corrections experience preferred but not mandatory
  • Active/Clear CPR and CPI, or NCI (American Heart Association)
  • Current TB and Hepatitis declaration
  • Agree to cooperate and participate in review and service programs of the facility including utilization management, quality assurance, credentialing, sanctioning, external audits, administrative procedures, and grievance procedures
  • Experience working with electronic medical records, email, and computer literate
  • Successful completion of competency testing, drug screen, background check, and other agency screening/application requirements
  • Successful completion of other client screening/application requirements
