Job Summary

The Medical/Surgical RN provides care for patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The Med/Surg RN collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Due to the broad range of medical conditions Med/Surge Nurses will encounter, they must be well versed in a large variety of health conditions.

Description of Work

  • Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans
  • Prepare and administer (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and record prescribed medications
  • Report adverse reactions to medications to members of healthcare team
  • Educate patients on surgical procedures
  • Record patient's medial information and vital signs
  • Monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients
  • Interpret and record electronic displays
  • Provide bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients
  • Initiate patient education plan, as prescribed by physician
  • Teach patient and significant others how to manage their illness/injury by explaining post-treatment home care needs
  • Change dressings, insert catheters, start IV fluids
  • Prepare equipment and aid physician during examination and treatment of patient
  • Respond to life-saving situations based upon during standards and protocol
  • Participate in discharge planning
  • Record all care information concisely, accurately and completely and in a timely manner in the appropriate format
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Minimum one (1) year Med/Surge Nurse experience
  • Active/Clear professional nurse licensure valid in North Carolina
  • Active/Clear advance certifications (e.g., Adult Progressive Critical Care Nurse [PCCN]), a plus
  • Active/Clear BLS (American Heart Association)
  • Specialty certification (ACLS/PALS/etc), as required
  • Experience working with electronic medical records, email, and computer literate
  • Successful completion of competency testing, drug screen, background check, physical exam, immunizations, and other agency screening/application requirements
  • Successful completion of other Client screening/application requirements
